| HOME VACATION TIPS - Wednesday, July 07, 2010
Claims such as storm damage, water damage, and vandalism frequently happen while the homeowner is away on vacation. Most of us spend significant time planning for a vacation but often forget to plan for what we are leaving behind...our home. Before you leave, consider the following:
- Turn off the water at the main water shut off valve.
- Unplug appliances such as TV, computer, lamps, hair dryers, water softener, etc. However, do not turn off your refrigerator or freezer.
- Close and lock all doors and windows. Close the blinds. Set one light on a timer to run during the nighttime hours.
- Do not turn off your Heating & Cooling. Set thermostat to an appropriate temperature (80 degrees in summer, 55 degrees in winter) Running these units keeps air cirulating and humidity under control as well as avoiding heat damage or frozen pips.
- Have a trusted person check on your house regularly by walking through the house including basement. Preferably everyday, but at least a couple times per week. Be sure that they have our agency contact information in case there is a problem.
